As we begin to approach the cold and winter season, we want to take a moment to share how we make weather-related decisions to cancel, delay, or release early.
Why We Delay, Cancel, or Dismiss Early
Weather conditions (snow, ice, fog, or other natural occurrences) may vary around the district and can change quickly, so we make decisions based on various sources:
We drive the roads to check the conditions of the roads throughout the district
Direct Conversations with:
The National Weather Service
Local School Districts
District Operations Team to determine parking lot clearing times
Scott County and the City of Bettendorf regarding road plow times
Note on Wind Chill
We will delay or close school for an “extreme cold warning”, not an advisory. If the warning is set to expire in the first couple hours of the school day, we will delay. If it is longer into the morning, we may cancel.
Weather Notifications
Families will be notified of a delay, early release, or cancellation in the following ways:
Phone Call
Text Message
Email
BCSD website
Local media, including radio, websites, and television
Please take the time now to check your contact information and preferences. This is the information we use to contact you during inclement weather days and other emergency related events. If you need to change your contact information, please do so through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal.
Making Up a Canceled School Day
If a day of school is canceled, we do make up the day. The missed school day(s) will be added to the end of the school year beginning with June 5, 2025.
Elementary Outdoor Recess
Students will have outdoor recess when the temperature is 0 degrees or above. If the temperature (windchill included) is less than 0 degrees, students will stay inside for recess. Please have your children dress for the weather (coats, gloves or mittens, hats, and boots if necessary).
