Safety Update & Reminders

Dec 09, 2021

Dear BCSD Parents/Guardians,

This week we’ve been receiving calls and emails reporting concerns about social media posts and rumors related to Bettendorf Middle School (BMS). At this time there is still no credible threat. We appreciate our community’s advocacy for ensuring we maintain a safe school environment.

We’d like to assure you that the Bettendorf School administration and school resource officers, with the Bettendorf Police Department, investigate all concerns reported. Although we cannot always share all the details of investigations, we can assure you that reported concerns are taken seriously, and are immediately followed up by district administration and the police department.

Please remember that rumors and social media posts are not necessarily true. They are always investigated, and additional measures would be taken if they were deemed credible.

We absolutely care about the safety of all our students and staff. We work diligently to have safe school environments by working with and training students and staff, limiting access to our buildings, and working very closely with the Bettendorf Police Department and our families.

If your students are concerned:

  • Remind them of how they prepare for situations through school safety drills, PBIS and counseling lessons.
  • Their teachers, counselors, administrators, security, and support staff are all available to hear their concerns and help them.
  • Remind them to be observant and let an adult know if they see or hear something that makes them feel uncomfortable, nervous or frightened.

It is also important to remind your student(s) that making comments intended to be a “joke” or “in jest”, are also not acceptable or appropriate. Students who engage in this type of behavior will receive consequences from school and, if applicable, from law enforcement.

Please continue to help us by notifying your school administration or the Bettendorf Police if you hear or learn about a potential threat. If you see or hear something, say something. You can also anonymously report your concerns through the P3 Campus app.

To help assuage concerns, and out of an abundance of caution, on Friday, December 10, 2021, there will be additional Bettendorf Police presence on the BMS campus. We appreciate your help in keeping our schools safe!

We will continue with our investigation and if the situation changes, we will inform you.

Regards,

Dr. Michelle Morse
Superintendent
Bettendorf Community School District

Keith Kimball
Police Chief
City of Bettendorf
