Congratulations to BHS Language Arts Teacher & Theatre Director Katie Howard for being inducted into the Iowa Thespian’s Hall of Fame. Iowa Thespians are the Iowa affiliate of the Educational Theatre Association. Katie was inducted during the Iowa Thespians annual festival held at the University of Northern Iowa, November 13, 2021. Katie has been an Iowa Thespian troupe sponsor for 19 years, beginning her career at Muscatine High School, and continuing her work with students at Bettendorf High School, where she is the current theatre director. Many students have benefited from not only her expertise but also her caring and inclusive theatre environment. Not only does Katie encourage students in her own school situation, but has sponsored and supported several students from both high schools in their roles as State Thespian Officers. Over several years, she has donated her time to several areas on the Iowa Thespian board, particularly during the Iowa Thespian Festival.

The following words are from some of her former students:

Emily Tinsman, BHS 2015 Graduate, former Miss Iowa, General Music Teacher, Carver Elementary, DSM
"She wanted to treat us like professionals, give us a taste of the real world and make us the best that we could be. She really wanted it to be an educational experience for everyone from actors, to pit members, to crew members. She really is fantastic at what she does! I wouldn’t have wanted anyone else as my director in high school. It was hard and stressful, but that’s why we looked good year after year!"

Will Luebke, BHS 2020 Graduate, current college student
"As someone who struggled with mental health as a high school student, I was often seeking stability and consistency in my life. I quickly found that in Katie Howard. She has developed a program at Bettendorf that exemplifies what a safe environment should be. Her empathy and compassion for her students is comparable to none. Her significant impact on my life and the lives of other students has inspired me to pursue education. I pray that one day I can be a teacher that at least one struggling kid can depend on to always be there for them. For me, that was Katie Howard. She is a true blessing in the community of Bettendorf and for Thespians all around."

Ellie Stamper, BHS 2015 Graduate, Communications Coordinator, Kohl’s Corporate Office
“Mrs. Howard taught me the power of dedication and instilled a passion for hard, quality work. She showed me first hand the impact that a listening ear and steady support can have on someone and I’m so thankful that my high school theater experience was with someone who cares so deeply about each of her students.”

Matthew McFate, BHS 2014 Graduate, Los Angeles based Actor and Director
“To put it simply, she made me feel capable. Not just as a performer, but as a person. She understood the delicate balance between mentor and friend, and constantly managed to inspire me to keep moving forward on my journey — even to this day. And for that, I will never be able to thank her enough.“
