BHS Take 1st Place & Longest Toss at Trebuchet Contest

BHS, PV and NS students competed in team challenges to assure their trebuchet launched raw eggs accurately and consistently at 75’, 100’ and 125’ targets. BHS Team "Million Dollar Arm" took first place in the event. Team members included Finley Bagby, Avery Dubberstein, Tyree Fennelly, Layton Pribyl. and Ethan Willis.

The BHS Team "Better late than Never" had the longest toss of the day of 223 ft. Team members included Terry Dunn, Ryan Sherman,& Robert Schwan

BHS StuCo Wins National Gold and Meritorious Distinction

Congrats to Bettendorf High School StuCo for winning the National Gold Council of Excellence and Honor Council with meritorious distinction at State. Sam Barnes was also recognized as a district officer & Aidan Goerdt as the outgoing state president.

BMS 7th & 8th Grade Students Selected for SEIBA Jr. High Honor Band

They just finished competing at the Iowa Forensic League State tournament, which combines all the schools from across the state for their final regular-season tournament of the year.

  • Talia Cary and Max Rantilla - Semifinalist in Public Forum Debate
  • Talia Cary - 5th Place in International Extemporaneous Speaking
  • Max Rantilla - 4th Place in Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking
  • Noah Rantilla - State Champion in International Extemporaneous Speaking
  • Noah Rantilla - Runner-Up and 2nd Place Speaker in Lincoln-Douglas Debate
  • Noah Rantilla - Runner-Up for Senior of the Year for the Iowa Forensic League
  • Zach Adams and Ayana Kidangayil both made it to Semifinals in their perspective events as well

BHS Students Earn Honors in HS Math Modeling Competition

March 4, 2021


Three teams of Bettendorf High Schools students participated in the High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling. Students collaborated within their team of 4 to create a solution to one of two problems. The team of Preston Martens, Carter Wolf, Trey Miller and Jaden Poole received a Meritorious designation for their solution.

BHS Speech and Debate Team Students Qualify for National Tournament

Congratulations to Coach Rankin and the Bettendorf Speech and Debate Team competed at the annual East Iowa District tournament, which determines who qualifies to attend the National tournament in June. Students are now fully qualified to attend the NSDA National Tournament. This year, Bettendorf qualified the following students:

BHS Wrestling Team Crowns 3 State Champions

Congratulations to Coach Knight and the BHS wrestling team for finishing 6th in the state duals last Wednesday. The wrestling team also crowned three (3) state champions Saturday night which was tied for the most champions of all 3 classes.

  • Junior Dustin Bohren – 3rd straight State appearance and first State Champion
  • Junior Bradley Hill – 2nd straight State appearance, perfect undefeated season and State Champion
  • Senior Griffin Liddle – 4th State appearance and two-time State Champion

Wynn Competing in State Women's Bowling Championship

Congratulations to Ammiah Wynn for qualifying for the Iowa High School State Women's Bowling Tournament on (date). Miah rolled games of 226 and 235 to qualify first in Bettendorf's sub-state qualifier.

Rantilla Awarded 2nd Place in East Iowa District Congress Tournament

Each year, students from across the state audition to be selected for various elite level honor music ensembles. The Iowa All State Ensembles and SEIBA Honor Band are two such events that accept a select group of students as the "best of the best". These events are sponsored by the state level music associations and draw several hundred students auditioning for a select few available spots.

This year, the audition process for these events was held virtually. Students submitted a video of their performance and were adjudicated by a panel of judges who evaluated their musical skill to choose recipients of this top honor.

BHS Female Wrestlers Take Honors in State Tournament

Congratulations to BHS junior Ella Schmit, at 106 pounds, for pinning her way to repeat as the state champion at the Girls' State Wrestling Tournament. BHS freshman Lexy Petersen took 5th place at 120 pounds. Great job, Ella and Lexy!

BHS Goldusters Earn Awards in ISDTA Competition

All 6 BHS soloists received Division I placements at the recent Iowa State Dance and Drill Team Association State virtual solo championship.

BHS STUCO Donates $10,000 to Riverbend Foodbank Type Recognitions

This year the Riverbend Foodbank had to cancel the usual Student Hunger Drive due to the pandemic. Our students never skipped a beat and knew that they still wanted to help whether they had the competition and recognition or not. They spent weeks soliciting at Hy-vee, have collected donations from family members, and organized a donation drop off at the school. They plan to continue collecting donations for this cause, but we are proud to say that we are able to write a $10,000 check to the Riverbend Foodbank for the holidays.

BHS Cheer Team Places in State Cheerleading Championships

11-16-20 Board Commendation

On November 7th, the Iowa Cheerleading Coaches Association State Cheerleading Championships were aired on Iowa High School Sports Network. To participate in the state competition this year, teams had to prepare their material earlier than usual and submit videos to the state in October. Bettendorf High School placed 2nd in the 4A TimeOut Non-Stunt Division!

All schools across the state are eligible to compete. The competition squads are coached by Tanya Gilmore, Jillian Knott & Haley Brock.

BHS FBLA Students Place in Virtual Business Battle

11-16-20 Board Commendation

Congratulations to Charles Silver, Freshman; Rory Spooner, Sophomore; Tatum Buckley, Sophomore; Isabella Hoffman, Junior; and Carolyn Kress, Junior for their success in The Business Battle, a virtual Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) competition in which students competed students from Colorado, Iowa and Missouri. The Business Battle featured seven assessments: Accounting & Financial Management; Business Basics; Business Development & Entrepreneurship; Business Management; Financial Concepts; Information Technology; and Marketing, Sales and Communications. BHS Cross Country Athletes and Coach Recognized by MAC

11-2-20 Board Commendation

The Mississippi Athletic Conference (MAC) recently released the 2020 Cross Country All-Conference teams and coaches of the year. Congratulations to Nick Moore and Chase Wakefield for earning spots on the Boys 1st team and Xavier Potts for being selected for the Boys 2nd team. Hannah Beintema, Sammy Fohtm and Emily See were chosen for the Girls 1st team. Both Bettendorf boys and girls cross country teams placed 2nd in the MAC for 2020. Girls Cross Country Coach Erin Flynn, with 19 year of coaching was also named Girls Cross Country Coach of the Year.

1982 Wrestling Team to be Inducted Into National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum

National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum

The 1982 Bettendorf High School wrestling team will be inducted into the Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame of Iowa on August 22, 2020, at the Dan Gable Museum.

Coached by Franc Freeman, who was inducted into the GBHOF in 2009, the 1982 Bettendorf High School wrestling team was 12-0 in dual meets, won every tournament, set the all-time points record and were ranked fourth in the nation. All ten members that qualified for state placed in the Top Five, led by Brian McCracken’s state championship at 185-pounds. The closest dual for the Bulldogs was a 34-13 win against Clinton High School, which finished third in the state.

Head Coach: Franc Freeman, Assistant Coaches: Paul Castro, Terry Paustian, Dana Deines, Merv Habenicht, Tom McCutcheon, and Bob Glenn.
