Iowa Seal of Biliteracy

Iowa Seal of Biliteracy

Sep 23, 2019

Dear Parent and Guardians,

At Bettendorf High School we encourage students to explore and embrace the many diverse cultures of our community and our world. One way students can take part in this initiative is to be proficient in more than one language. Being proficient in more than one language is a 21st century skill that can set students up for success in their future - whether that be reaching out to those who make up our culturally rich community or assisting businesses in broadening their global presence. Bettendorf High School is partnering with the State of Iowa to recognize students who can demonstrate proficiency in English and a world language of the student's choosing with the Iowa Seal of Biliteracy.

The State of Iowa's Seal of Biliteracy is a recognition offered to high school students who can demonstrate proficiency in English and a foreign language. The Seal is placed on the transcripts graduating students who meet Iowa's guidelines for it. The award celebrates ability - not seat time in a class. The State of Iowa Seal of Biliteracy is offered to all high school students within the Bettendorf School District who can demonstrate proficiency in English and a world language of the student's choosing. The world language does not have to be offered in the Bettendorf School District. It can, for example, be a language that a student speaks with family or perhaps a language that a student learned abroad. In order to receive the Seal of Biliteracy, your student will need to accomplish two tasks: one in English and one in the world language of choice. Below is a list of exams available to students at Bettendorf High School that will satisfy Iowa's requirements to receive the Seal of Biliteracy:

English Component:

ACT score of 18 or higher in English
-or-
SAT score of 470 or higher in English
-or-
ISASP reading comprehension score of proficient (9-12)

Foreign Language Component:

Spanish:
AP score of 3 or higher
-or-
STAMP score of Intermediate 5 in all areas of the exam

French:
AP score of 3 or higher
-or-
STAMP score of Intermediate 5 in all areas of the exam

German:
AP score of 3 or higher
-or-
all components of B1 Goethe Zertifikat successfully passed at the B1 level

-or-

STAMP score of Intermediate 5 in all areas of the exam

Other Languages:
Should your student speak other languages than those listed above, the state of Iowa will accept other types of testing for those languages or, in some cases, an interview with an approved proficiency evaluator should no test for that language exist.

Should your student have graduated by the time scores from their exams are received, Bettendorf High School will provide one copy of their transcripts with the Seal of Biliteracy attached at no charge.

We in the World Language department hope that you and your student take advantage of this new opportunity. Please fill out the information below, so our department has an idea of how many students will be reaching for this honor. Please feel free to contact Bettendorf High School or your student's World Language teacher with any questions you may have.

Kind Regards,

The World Language Department at Bettendorf High School
