Content Standards Background
 The Bettendorf Community School District has written PK-8 Content Standards and Benchmarks for each curricular area by grade level.
The development of Content Standards and Benchmarks has been an evolving process since the 1993-94 school year involving parents, community members, teachers, and administrators. The district's Content Standards and Benchmarks have been aligned with national standards across all curricular areas. Refinements will continue to be made as the Content Standards are assessed and curriculum is updated.
The K-8 Content Standards represent the essential components of the District's core curriculum. Content Standards represent the areas where classroom teachers must spend the majority of their time in teaching, learning, and guiding students.
The Content Standards serve as a guide in planning instruction and curriculum.
District curriculum and grade level committees have identified grade level skills that students should acquire as they progress through school.
Grade Level Skills
1. Content Standards have been selected on the basis of teacher and parent input, current and future curriculum, and an analysis of practices within curricular areas.
2. Content Standards include essential student learnings. Essential learning goals represent the majority of the instruction of the core curriculum for a subject area at grade level.
3. Content Standards are not minimum competencies nor are they all that may be included
in a comprehensive educational experience.
4. With the identification of essential Content Standards for each curricular area by grade level, greater consistency and alignment of core instructional topics will be achieved.
