DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills)
The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) are a set of procedures and measures for assessing the acquisition of early literacy skills from kindergarten through sixth grade. They are designed to be short (one minute) fluency measures used to regularly monitor the development of early literacy and early reading skills.
|
DIBELS are individually administered measures of student skills in each of the key basic early literacy skills. |
DIBELS are comprised of seven measures to function as indicators of phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle, accuracy and fluency with connected text, reading comprehension, and vocabulary. DIBELS were designed for use in identifying children experiencing difficulty in acquisition of basic early literacy skills in order to provide support early and prevent the occurrence of later reading difficulties.

Iowa Assessments
Formerly know as ITBS (Iowa Test of Basic Skills) & ITED (Iowa Tests of Education Development)
Iowa Testing Programs (ITP) is a research, development, and outreach unit in the College of Education at the University of Iowa. Virtually all Iowa school districts-both public and private-have voluntarily participated in this program annually since its inception.
ADMINISTERED: Fall (November 1-11, 2011)
GRADES: BCSD currently uses Iowa Assessments for Grades 3-8, & 11
MAP (Measures of Academic Progress)
Created by educators for educators, MAP assessments provide detailed, actionable data about where each child is on their unique learning path. Because student engagement is essential to any testing experience, NWEA works with educators to create test items that interest children and help to capture detail about what they know and what they’re ready to learn. It’s information teachers can use in the classroom to help every child, every day.
Adapting the Test to the Student
MAP dynamically adapts to a student’s responses – as they take the test.
- Answer a question correctly and the test presents a more challenging item
- Miss a question, and MAP offers a simpler item
In this way, the test narrows in on a student’s learning level, engaging them with content that allows them to succeed.
ADMINISTERED: Three times a year
Fall (September 12-30, 2011) | Winter (January 17 – February 16, 2012) | Spring (April 23- May 18, 2012)
During each testing period students will spend a total of about three hours completing these tests.
GRADES: 3rd-9th Grade
PLAN (Associated with ACT)
The PLAN® program helps 10th graders build a solid foundation for future academic and career success and provides information needed to address school districts' high-priority issues. It is a comprehensive guidance resource that helps students measure their current academic development, explore career/training options, and make plans for the remaining years of high school and post-graduation years.
PLAN® contains four curriculum-based assessments: English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science. The assessment is based on the major areas of high school and postsecondary instructional programs and measures the skills and knowledge needed for college success.
PLAN also includes a career exploration component that stimulates students' thinking about future plans and relates personal characteristics to career options.
ADMINISTERED: Fall (November 3-4, 2011)
